Ponderize

In a talk given at General Conference, October 2015, an idea was shared for studying the scriptures with your family.  It is called PONDERIZE.  Choose a scripture each week.  Post it so that you see it everyday. Throughout the week, PONDER the words and memorIZE it.

As a family, we have decided to try this new idea.  We will post our weekly scriptures, and maybe even some thoughts, here.

1 Nephi 1:1  (Shane's turn to pick...)
I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days.

Mosiah 3:19
For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be, forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.

Moroni 7: 47 (but read 45 & 46 too!)
45  And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth.  Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail –

*47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.

2 Nephi 21: 1, 2

1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.

2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

Alma 37: 6-7

6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.
7 And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.

Special Thoughts: Disneyland Roadtrip

One day I was so excited because my family was traveling to Disneyland (only the best place in the world). We were leaving our Utah home for a week and just like usual we were running behind. We got the car loaded up with suitcases, we all piled in the car, and we backed down the driveway. We had to pause of course to make sure the garage closed and stayed down. We are all a little frustrated because 1. my mom couldn't turn on the air fast enough for all of us sweaty people 2. my brothers stuff was on my side of the back seat 3. we were running late and were about to catch early morning rush hour. We got on the road and sure enough only two miles down the freeway we came to a complete stop. NOBODY said a word because the first to speak would break that large elephant in the car in two. We were sitting there in awful traffic and I started to notice all the cars around us. A little claustrophobic if you think about suitcases, blankets, food, 4 lanes of traffic dead stop going both north and south, bumper to bumper. I am sure it started to rain or something just to make the matters worse. Then all the sudden it hit me. Nobody else on this packed freeway just left the Kaysville home I just pulled away from and is heading to the exact same hotel in Anaheim, California. Someone could have just left their graveyard shift and is going home to sleep before their next job starting that afternoon. Someone could have kissed their kids goodbye as they headed to work while the kids got ready for school. Someone could be headed to the hospital to visit an ill family member. Moral of the examples is: no two people (or cars) left the same place and are going to the same destination. (Unless you are all following each other, but that defeats the purpose so it doesn't matter.) This is just like life though. Right now we are on a microscopic freeway in the plan that Heavenly Father has for us. There is a great analogy in "Our Search For Happiness" by M. Russell Ballard. He said, "... let's say you had a rope that extended both directions off into the cosmos- forever. And let's say you took a single strand of thread and wrapped it around the rope once at its midpoint. The rope to the left of the thread could represent our life before birth. The rope to the right of the thread could represent our life after death. And that single strand of thread would represent the span of our mortal lives here on earth in comparison to eternity." Most people would say that it doesn't matter what you do in that microscopic thread of time. But I am here to tell you that yes, it does matter the choices you make because it effects your destination. If you have a specific destination to get to, how are you going to get there? If you don't have a route, where are you headed? Life is like this freeway of bumper to bumper cars. We leave the left side of our eternity rope only to find ourselves in the middle of a thread that is filled with confusion, conflict, and choices. A lot of things are out of our control like the terrible trials of traffic jams that consume our life or the rainstorms that only get us wet. It is critical to remember that each of us, children of our loving Heavenly Father, have all experienced different courses of travel. Nobody on this Earth has left that Kaysville home and headed to Disneyland with the exact same traffic. Nobody has had this exact experience that I have been sharing with you. Each and every one of us have our own lives and our own stories. We have all, however, made good choices and bad choices. We have turned right and we have turned left. Heading west is the most logical way to get to Disneyland from Utah but if we don't have a correct understanding of that and if we aren't prepared for that, then most likely we will take an exit heading east (because inevitably that is everybody's luck). Choices affect our destination. We cannot wait until we come to a fork in the road to decide if we go left, right, or straight. It is critical that we prepare for these roadblocks so that when we are in the situation we have already made the decision. Let's look back at what we have traveled so far in the course of our existence. We lived with our loving Heavenly Father and anyone who is reading this chose to follow His plan. We don't know all that happened and we don't know how we all made that decision but we chose to come to earth. We all left a specific place only to come to this freeway of life full of agency and accountability. Now that we are on this freeway it is crucial we have a plan or a route in order to get to the destination in which we desire. Now I am not saying that Disneyland is the Celestial Kingdom or anything... but that was my destination at this moment in time and in order to get to that goal we had to follow a specific road map. Luckily we each have a pre-programmed GPS called the Holy Ghost who can help us make decisions to reach that final destination. We are, oh, so blessed. As we follow the guidance of the Holy Ghost we will come out of the traffic jams stronger, smarter, and greater than we were previously. The GPS will tell you which way you should  go but it is up to us to put our heart into it to do it willingly and happily. I personally believe that the best way to be happy in the traffic jams of life are to evaluate our time. Are we using that time stuck in traffic to spend quality time with the people that matter most to us? Or are we preoccupied with the things of the world (music, movies, games, etc.) that shut us out from learning and progressing? When our lives seem to be stuck in traffic, we need to recognize the path that we are on and the things we are doing on that path. Our choices are our destination. The way we turn and our attitude towards it shows Heavenly Father the path we want to take. Following and using the divine tools He has provided us with will only make life easier and our destination tangible. Plug your plan into the GPS and allow the Holy Ghost to guide your ways. Preach My Gospel states, "You are surrounded by people. You pass them on the street, visit them in their homes, and travel among them. All of them are children of God, your brothers and sisters. God loves them just as He loves you. Many of these people are searching for purpose in life. They are concerned for their families. They need the sense of belonging that comes from the knowledge that they are children of God, members of His eternal family. They want to feel secure in a world of changing values." Never forget that those eight lanes of bumper to bumper traffic are filled with your brothers and sisters. They have all driven down different paths of life but you're paths cross because you have both chosen God's freeway. You lived with God and you will live with Him again if your choices reflect your commitment to make it there. Alma 12:24 says, "... there was a space granted unto man in which he might repent; therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us..." Decisions determine your destination.

Special Thoughts: Lord, I Would Follow Thee

October 5, 2015
This week Sister Bell and I were singing our daily hymn (yes, I know, you don't believe that I actually do this) before Companionship Study. And we sung, "Lord, I Would Follow Thee."  As I read it, my mind was enlightened with the application of the verses and the stages of missionary life.

Lord, I Would Follow Thee
Savior may I learn to love thee, Walk the path that thou hast shown: Pre-mission. You finally recognize your love for Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. You realize your divine purpose and the path that is planned for you. A MISSION!
Pause to help and lift another, Finding strength beyond my own. Savior, may I learn to love thee- Lord, I would follow thee: You get to the MTC and you are just so excited to help others and even more excited to get out in the field to help real people. You learn that you can really find strength from above. You are following Him by submitting to the Father's will and accepting the marvelous plan He has in store for you no matter what challenges come your way.

Who I am I to judge another When I walk imperfectly?: You get out into the mission field and see real people, with real problems. Some caused by own mistakes and some just mortal tribulations. You realize that everything you see on TV actually happens in real life.

In the quiet heart is hidden Sorrow that the eye can't see. Who am I to judge another? Lord, I would follow thee: You get homesick, people aren't happy to see you, your faith is being tested, you question your desire to serve and you literally hurt inside. You have investigators drop you, people say "not interested" before you even have a chance to tell them what they "aren't interested" in and you have a companion you are with 24/7... You deal with heartache. You are following Him by enduring well, not giving in and not giving up.
I would be my brother's keeper; I would learn the healer's art: You strengthen your testimony and do your best to share it with everyone! You study more, pray harder, fast intentionally, and humble yourself. You recognize the power and authority you have, the way your talents apply into the mission field, and how the Gospel really does bless individuals and families.
To the wounded and the weary I would show a gentle heart. I would be my brother's keeper- Lord, I would follow thee: You are no longer ON a mission, you are now SERVING a mission. You finally GET IT! You are able to follow the promptings of the spirit and fully rely on the Holy Ghost to tell you where to go, who to see, and what to say. You teach and testify with power. You are constantly magnifying your calling and you are seeing the miracles all around you. You are following Him by turning outward and lifting where you stand.
Savior, may I love my brother As I know thou lovest me:  You love the people that you serve with- companions, fellow missionaries, members, and nonmembers. You appreciate your leaders and you abide by the counsel and guidance given by them. You learn how to listen, take advice and criticism well, and you truly desire to improve.
Find in thee my strength, my beacon, For thy servant I would be. Savior, may I love my brother- Lord, I would follow thee: Your mission is devoted selfless service but it doesn't just stop there. Your life is devoted selfless service. You recognize that all you have had, all you currently have, and all you ever will have is because of Heavenly Father. The atonement is our strength. And we are now servants. Instruments used for good in the world. We are following in the Lord's footsteps. Making mistakes, yes, but learning from them, repenting, and changing. You are following Him by giving all time, efforts, and abilities to the Father allowing him to work through you to bless others.
Love, Sister Rachel Rodda

Special Thoughts: Member Missionary

What role do the members play in our missionary work? In our ward right now our members are giving us referrals, they are service minded and always looking for ways to help around the island, they are good examples of righteous living, and they are great at coming to lessons whether it is with investigators or less active/recent converts. However, contacting these "not interested" referrals is not helping anyone. When we aren't contacting referrals or teaching a lesson we are tracting. We tract A LOT. Thank goodness I love tracting or I would die. Houses are far and few between with long dirt driveways. Most of the time they aren't home and if they are they have had missionaries knock on their door before and they aren't pleased to see another set. I am so grateful that these elders asked this question because it it something that Sister Bell and I have been talking a lot about recently. We have made some plans on how to better the member-missionary work here on the Island.

Member Missionary Work.

Pretend the following statistics are accurate.:)

An ox can pull a wagon 1 mile. Another ox can pull the same wagon 2 miles. But you hook both of the oxen up to the wagon and they can pull it 1000 miles. Now the numbers might not be correct but the principle is correct. I don't think any of us have oxen pulling  wagons a thousand miles for us so let's change those oxen to something that does help or apply to us. Members of the church all over the world and missionaries serving all over the world are engaged in the same cause: hastening the work of salvation. Members can only do so much as well as the missionaries. Separately we can pull a wagon a total of 3 miles. But working together we can hasten the work 1000 times further.

I think the common denominator is flipping the thought of "how can members help the missionaries in this great cause" to "how can missionaries help the members in this great cause". Now I am not an expert and I don't have a doctorate in "missionary science" but I do know that this is the greatest work on Earth and there are always ways to learn and grow. There are people who need to know that the Church of Jesus Christ has been restored to the Earth and because of that the Priesthood authority has been restored allowing us to perform sacred and everlasting ordinances that literally open the doors to the Celestial Kingdom.

Now as Sister Bell and I have discussed the idea of member missionary work we have thought about the talk verses the walk. Yes, more people than you think know you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Yes, they know that you have a faith in Jesus Christ and that you go to church to worship and that you pray for guidance. But these are just words. Do these people know that you are who you are BECAUSE you are a member of the church and you know the blessings promised to those you live faithfully? Do they know you are who you are BECAUSE you chose to "enter in by the gate" and are on a "strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life" where you can live with Heavenly Father and your families forever? These people, our lost brothers and sisters, need the invitation to come unto Christ.

Right now members of the church are doing the right things. They are giving missionaries referrals to contact, they are sitting in on lessons, and they are sharing their testimonies when asked to. They are helping missionaries do missionary work but they are only pulling the wagon 2 miles. It should be the other way around. They should allow us (the missionaries) help them do missionary work. It is more than a direction of who to go see it is using us as a resource to help them share the Gospel so we can pull the wagon of Salvation 1000 miles.

As Sister Bell and I have studied, prayed, and pondered ways to move this forward we came across a beautiful promise in Preach my Gospel. It states on page 2, "As your understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ grows, your desire to share the gospel will increase. You will feel, as Lehi did, the 'great... importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth' (2 Nephi 2:8)." We are blessed to have member dinners majority of the week. We can use these opportunities to (A) Help strengthen their testimonies of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and (B) allow them to practice inviting their friends to meet with the missionaries. I know that as members invite their friends and family to learn more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, missionary work will rapidly increase. When members are the ones inviting they are instant fellowship always there to encourage, uplift, and love. Members don't need to know all the doctrine, they don't need to know scriptures like the back of their hand, and they don't need to know how to teach. They are there for support and social aspects. Missionaries on the other hand are set apart for a period of 18 months to 2 years to teach and testify of the principles of the gospel.

So how can we discus this while in a members home? As we share a passage of scripture on the Atonement of our Savior the spirit will confirm their testimony that already  exists. We then invite them to study the Atonement throughout the week. As they do so we ask that they have a piece of paper and pen by them where they can write down names that come to their mind. These are not names that they will give to us to contact. These are people they will share their testimony of Jesus Christ with and invite them to learn more by meeting with the missionaries. The people they write down are inspired as they prayfully plead with the Lord for names to come to their mind.

To help them feel comfortable inviting these friends to learn more we will role play with them. We will first explain the role play, our companionship will demonstrate, then the members will practice. They will give us a brief background of who their friends are, what they enjoy, and their personality. We will then follow the spirit in what that friend would say or do as the members invite to meet with the missionaries. Then we will evaluate, giving them compliments on the things they did well and suggestions on how they could improve. Then we would repractice if time allows.

Our purpose as missionaries is to invite others to come unto Christ by helping hem receive the restored Gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end. This is the same purpose for members. We can only pull the wagon a total of 3 miles if we try to accomplish this purpose separately. As missionaries and members work together we can pull it 1000 miles or further.

I am grateful for the Atonement of Jesus Christ. I know that because he suffered, he not only overcame physical and spiritual death, but he now knows how we feel. He was perfect, he didn't know what it felt like to sin, he didn't know what it felt like to be sick. But because he suffered he now knows what it feels like. He can relate to us. He is he only one who knows exactly how we feel because he went through that exact same thing. He didn't just suffer for general trials, struggles, tribulations, temptations, pains, sicknesses, weaknesses, etc. He suffered specifically for individuals. Specifically for you. I know as we continue to study the Atonement we will have a desire to share the gospel with everyone we come in contact with allowing members and missionaries to work together- pulling the work of salvation 1000 miles.
